A Night of Light, Fun, and Community Spirit at Labuan Square
In August, Labuan Square in Norlane was transformed into a vibrant gathering space as 450 residents came together to celebrate community, creativity, and connection. What began as a simple idea by local volunteers grew into a memorable evening of lights, music, and shared stories, showcasing the strength of Norlane’s community spirit. With zero budget but an abundance of passion, the event, supported by The Good Neighbourhood Project, was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when people unite to reclaim and revitalise their spaces.
The square was brought to life with three stunning visual projections: one displaying historical images of Norlane, another capturing its evolving identity, and a third showing inspiring scenes from community-driven projects worldwide. The images brought back memories for long-time residents and offered newer members a deeper appreciation for Norlane’s past and future. These visuals not only created an atmosphere of nostalgia and hope but sparked conversations about how Norlane might continue to grow.
Adding to the warmth of the night, two fire pits served as hubs for connection. Around one, community members cooked over 200 pieces of traditional damper, while the second became a spot for stories and reflection. Frank’s art studio was also transformed, becoming a glowing gallery with live music, providing a space for locals to enjoy art and music together.
Children brought energy and laughter, running around in neon costumes, enjoying spontaneous games, and even setting up a pop-up board game corner in the laundromat. The mural, “Don’t Forget About Me: Cowies Creek,” was beautifully lit, reminding everyone of their connection to both the land and each other.
Reflecting on the event, residents expressed pride in seeing Labuan Square alive again. Many saw it as a hopeful glimpse into the future, where shared experiences can inspire stronger connections and a renewed sense of belonging. For Norlane, the night highlighted a powerful truth: communities can thrive and create change when they come together, share their talents, and celebrate the unique beauty within their neighbourhood.
The Good Neighbourhood Project was honoured to support this grassroots celebration, watching as neighbours turned a shared vision into reality. Here’s to many more nights like this, where Norlane’s light shines bright, and its community grows stronger together.
